Social impact

Each time you purchase a Maame product, you make a direct impact on the lives of women that make shea butter and their families in Northern Ghana, helping alleviating poverty in West Africa. Here’s how:

Our commitment to fair trade

Through our partnership with Baraka Shea Butter, we are committing to using only Community Certified Fair Trade shea butter in our products.

This means:

  • Stable income channel: Through women's cooperatives, we pay a premium price above market price to the hardworking women who hand make the shea butter using traditional methods passed down through the generations
  • Fair Price: Transparent value chain, no middle-man and you get  premium quality products at a reasonable price

Caring for communities

Our collaboration with Baraka Shea Butter also means that we can do more to help the local communities. In Ghana, we work with NGOs to help subsidise tuition costs for kids in secondary and post-secondary school programs. We also support children’s education through providing school supplies and school uniforms for them.

Caring for the environment

At Maame, we strongly believe that being a responsible steward of the environment is good for business, good for our customers and good for the Earth. That’s why all of our products come in 100% recyclable and environmentally-safe packaging. We also believe that being environmentally responsible shouldn’t just apply to us but should extend through our entire supply chain, therefor, we continue educating and building up the awareness of local people on shea tree conservation, to ensure wild shea tree populations are not diminished - which supports the natural ecosystem and the local economy. We also insist using only indigenous resources and traditional handcrafting way to make our shea butter, with no additives and no waste generated throughout the process. For example, when shea nuts are harvested to make shea butter, the shea husks are kept to be used as fuel.

We believe business can and should be a force for good, integrating social value, business value, and environmental stewardship.
